What We Believe

The following is a brief summary of the key teachings at St Andrew’s.

  • What we believe is based on the teachings of the Bible, the living word of God. The Bible is our supreme authority in all matters of faith, conduct and experience.
  • There is one unique and eternal God, who exists in an everlasting relationship of Father, Son and Holy Spirit – one God in three persons. God is sovereign in all things.
  • Men and women are created in the image of God, and so we enjoy a unique dignity in creation and a unique relationship with God. Tragically, human nature has been universally sinful since the Fall and all are guilty before God. This leaves us under the wrath and condemnation of God.
  • Jesus Christ is both fully God and truly human. He endured temptation, suffered and died. On the third day He rose from the dead bodily and is now exalted bodily as the ruler of all.
  • We believe that there is only one name under heaven by which we may be brought into a saving relationship with God: the name ‘Jesus Christ’.
  • It is only through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ as our representative and substitute, that the guilt, penalty and power of sin can be removed. In that death, God demonstrates His love to us most perfectly and establishes His victory over Satan and all His foes. The work of the Holy Spirit is necessary to make the death of Jesus Christ effective in an individuals life. The Holy Spirit enables us to repent and put our faith in Jesus Christ. So then, salvation is entirely of God’s grace and not of human merit or works.
  • The Holy Spirit works to illuminate believers’ minds to grasp the truth of Scripture, producing in us His fruit and empowering our service.
  • Each congregation is the gathering of believers around Jesus Christ and His word. They are communities of people intended by God to bear witness to Him and to actively seek the extension of His rule. He grants us gifts for the purpose of service. Their use is determined by the principle of building the church. Not every gift is given to every church at every moment of it’s life, only those necessary for the building of Christ’s body.
  • Within the congregation, all who trust in the Lord Jesus are involved in serving that particular community as each uses his or her gifts in a godly manner, working to build the church in love.

The official statements of belief of our church are to be found in the creeds and the 39 articles of religion, both of which are printed in the back of the prayer books. Don’t hesitate to ask to see these if that would be a help to you.
